The Changing Nature of Journalism

In this blog, I will discuss the changing nature of journalism.

Journalism is deeply influenced by a changing media environment which has led to a significant increase in the speed of innovation as well as several media channels and platforms.

Firstly, the development of new digital technology has changed news consumption.

For one hundred years before, you could only use the newspaper to read the news.

Next fifty years, we had more options to keep ourselves updated with news which are radio and TV.

Nowadays, to stay informed about breaking news, we only need a wireless laptop, smartphone or tablet.

According to ‘The Impact of Digital Platforms on News and Journalistic Content’ (p.25), in 2018, fifty-nine per cent of Aussies accessed news by using their smartphones.

Moreover, due to the growth of social media, the social network has been considered as a medium for producing and distributing the news.

Newspapers and TV channels will put their stories and breaking news online first, such as on their official Facebook page or Twitter accounts before broadcasting the story.

Besides the professional and traditional journalism, ‘citizen journalism’ also currently plays a key role in spreading the news on the Internet.

The ‘citizen journalism’ could be a threat for professional journalism because their news would be likely to spread faster than professional journalists’ news because the journalists have to sit on their stories for many hours to produce news.

Nevertheless, ‘citizen journalism’ has led to the rise of fake news, they received a lot of engagement from social media users and they could crowd out real news.

*Individualism: In the advertisement which comes from France, the image of “I” is clearly and more significant than “We”. We could see in the ads, the image of “a boy” appears alone throughout the commercial, he does anything by own himself. However, in Vietnam’s advertisement, the image of community is accounted for nearly ninety percentage of ads.

*Uncertainty avoidance: As you can see in the France’s advertisement, a boy could have a solution when he has a problem. On the other hand, in Vietnam’s advertisement, there are many surprises. People do not have any doubt about the stranger things happened until the truths come.

Two advertisements above are about toys. The first commercial is from Australia of the brand ‘LEGO’. They are promoting their products in the occasion ‘Christmas’. The second advertisement is from Brazil of the brand ‘Hasbro’. They sell doll products, they show us how children can play with the dolls and the lessons children could learn from the toys.

Firstly, I choose the LEGO ads because it meets the “New Associations” and “Attention Grabbing”. The LEGO ads showed the story about Santa, he was far away from home and he relied on his friends, LEGO bricks and discarded objects to build a solution that might get him home in time for Christmas. Children could create a lot of things just from LEGO bricks and the toys also encourage children’s creativity to make their own stories from these toys.

Secondly, I choose the Hasbro ads because it meets the “New Associations”. Hasbro sells the doll products. Through the ads, they showed us that children could practice caring, develop their responsibility and lead to be a better person. This ads is to persuade parents who have a little child that Hasbro’s toys could help their children learn how to take care a person.
